ABOUT US

 

Heartstart Brackley is a scheme associated with the British Heart Foundation. It teaches members of the public Emergency Life Support skills (basic life support). The course lasts for two hours and is free to local members of the public.

 

Heartstart Brackley is run and organised by the Brackley Community First Responders, the volunteer arm of the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, who deal with many different types of 999 call every day, voluntarily, supporting the local Ambulance Service.

The British Heart Foundation is keen to emphasise the importance of as many people as possible learning these skills because:

• Every year around 124,000 people in the UK suffer a heart attack;
• Many of them suffer cardiac arrest and die before reaching hospital;
• Without resuscitation, cardiac arrest is always fatal;
• By performing CPR, bystanders can double the person's chances of survival.

 

Through Heartstart, the British Heart Foundation promotes and develops Emergency Life Support training across the UK.  Although Heartstart has already trained millions of people, the BHF aims to help even more to save lives whilst waiting for professional help to arrive, and works with a number of partners to achieve this end.

 

THE TEAM

The Heartstart Brackley Team is made up of the following individuals:

 

Scheme Director: Dr. John Harrison MBBS FRCP FRCGP DFFP DRCOG (London) Dip Oc Med,

Brackley Medical Centre, 77, Halse Road, Brackley.

 

The Scheme Director makes sure that the Heartstart Scheme complies with the conditions of affiliation to the British Heart Foundation, and advises on a range of issues as necessary.

 

Dr. Harrison Qualified in 1984; is a GP trainer and student tutor for Imperial College medical students, Chairman of Principal Medical Limited, an Oxfordshire primary care organisation which operates community based medical services. His Interests include diabetes and Osteoporosis.

Training Supervisor & Child Protection Officer: Adam Jeskins

Associate Ambulance Practitioner, East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

 

The Training Supervisor is responsible for the training and assessing of our Scheme's Instructors, acting as our advisor on Emergency Life Support training, overseeing the quality of Emergency Life Support training and for keeping our Instructor's up to date on Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

 

Adam is an Associate Ambulance Practitioner with East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust working from Brackley Ambulance Station and has been in First Aid for over 25 years, is a First Aid / AED Instructor / Assessor and a British Heart Foundation Instructor Trainer, acting as training supervisor for a number of other Heartstart programmes.

 

Adam is on the register of Health Practice Associates and an Associate Member of the College of Paramedics.

 

 Adam also responds voluntarily outside of work as a Community First Responder for East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust and is the Co-ordinator / Treasurer of Brackley Community First Responders.

 

 

Scheme Co-Ordinator: Adam Jeskins

 

The Scheme Co-ordinator is responsible for organising and publicising the Heartstart courses, keeping records of assessments, class records and maintaining the equipment used for training (i.e. manikins).  In addition the Scheme Co-ordinator organises meetings and arranges the Instructors for each training session and is the main contact between the Scheme and the British Heart Foundation.

The Instructors are responsible for delivering the Heartstart training programme.  Instructors teach a minimum of two courses per year to retain their instructor status, and undertake an annual assessed delivery and refresher training course from the Training Supervisor.

 

All Heartstart Brackley Instructors are currently serving Community First Responders with the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust.
